Flexibility and adaptability were the two themes that dominated my ISM journey last week. I had an interview scheduled with a professional for Tuesday, which unfortunately, fell through. The person I was scheduled to meet with had a child who came down with an illness so we had to reschedule. However, I was not aware of this until after I had left my class and gotten dressed and prepared myself mentally for the interview. Later that day, we rescheduled our conversation to the following Thursday.
Even though it was postponed, the interview still went really well. The attorney I spoke with used to be a prosecuting attorney for the city of Dallas who is now a legal recruiter. Although my field is corporate law, criminal litigation has always been an interest of mine and it was originally the reason I got into law. I learned a lot about the collegiate aspects of becoming a lawyer as well as some of the struggles to anticipate. As a fellow woman of color, the professional I spoke with offered me a lot of insight into breaking into a field in which we are the minority. We spoke for almost forty five minutes and we honestly could have gone longer.
The last two interviews that I have conducted have been based on referrals that I received, but next week is the first time that I am speaking with a professional that I don't have a personal connection with. The process that we've been using in ISM thus far has yielded results for me and I think that the emailing structure is a large reason as to why. I look forward to conducting my last few interviews and then finally selecting a mentor in the very near future!
