Articulation, confidence, and practice. The three keys to being successful at interviews. This past week in ISM, we have created responses to interview questions and delved into the specifics of interviewing in order to prepare for the Business Symposium which is on Wednesday, October 7th. The bulk of my attention was spent formulating my answer to the infamous "tell me a little bit about yourself" question. I am not the kind of person who likes talking about themselves — that's not to say that I am not an effective communicator, because I am (just not about myself) — which makes this question especially difficult for me to answer. However, this week we learned about how to structure your response in a way that concisely answers the question while also providing the necessary insight into your character. For example, a strong answer includes your extracurricular activities, how others describe you, and a little bit about your hobbies. This strategy was extremely helpful to me because I thrive on structure, so having a template of information to include really cleared up my doubts.
A personal goal of mine this week was to become better at my time management skills, especially when it comes to ISM. Because this class places a premium on independent work and responsibility, it's essential that I remain up to date with the material. As the year progresses, the workload is only going to increase, therefore time management will also become more important. In order to ensure that I am managing my time to the best of my ability, I purchased a hard copy planner. Previously, I had used my phone to list my tasks for the week but I found that was too distracting. By transferring my weekly duties to a paper/pencil form, I believe that I can remain committed to staying on track with my responsibilities.
