This week I conducted my third ISM mentor interview and this time it was with a professional who worked for a corporate law firm. I think that setting up meetings with people in a wide range of specialties even just within corporate law has been something that I have been successful with. My first interview was with someone who served as in house counsel to a company, my second interview was with a former prosecutor turned legal recruiter, and finally my third interview was with an attorney who works for a law firm. Speaking to this many professionals really helped me to narrow down the role I envision for myself in the future. I now am aware that in house counsel is not likely to be the correct path for me. In house counsel involves work with only one company and overseeing the legality of their transactions. This is also largely a desk job and involves very little time actually spent arguing cases in court. On the other hand, a position with a law firm opens up a whole new world of possibilities. Because I would have numerous clients with varying needs, it's more likely that I would also gain some experience in litigation.
Aside from conducting interviews, we had to deliver a presentation on a place we would like to travel to and take the class with us. I chose to go to Hogsmeade, a fictional village within the world of Harry Potter. I had a lot of fun writing the speech and I really liked that I had the ability to present on a topic that genuinely interests me. I was not aware, however, that we needed visuals (like a slideshow) to accompany our presentation. That being said, I will be sure to include visuals on all my speeches going forward. One major piece of feedback that I received was to present the speech instead of just read it off the screen. I think that by practicing more, I can make my speeches sound more natural and much less scripted.
